Flexible manufacturing showcased by MCM in Paris

Thanks to its customised multi-process solutions, for more than 25 years MCM has been considered an international reference partner in the aerospace industry. A philosophy of continuous and constant innovation, combined with a deep knowledge of process technologies, allows the Italian company to develop solutions that solve the specific production needs of its customers, and at the same time represents state-of the-art technology for precision machining on any type of alloy.

At Paris the company has components made by industry leaders and MCM’s partners, through flexible production and multi-tasking systems. The aim is to help visitors experience at first hand the quality of the machining obtained and to present the technological solutions applied to solve the different production cases.

For example, a Longeron A330 aeronautical structural component (35NiCrMo16) manufactured at Airbus’ facilities in Toulouse.

For the production of this component, Airbus chose to install an FMS by MCM, specifically designed to meet the production needs of the customer according to a precise plant layout. The FMS consists of six Jet Five 5000 Titanium machining centres, eighteen pallets, one shuttle for pallet conveying in vertical a position, two 0/90° tilting loading/unloading stations, ten vertical pallet storage spaces. The total area used is approximately 80 x 15m. The plant produces structural components made of titanium alloys and hard materials.

Thanks to the adoption of a large number of sensors, all the machines are continuously monitored and their statuses are detected in real time. The interpretation of the huge amount of data produced is performed by MCM’s jFMX supervisor software, which also identifies and monitors any manufacturing trends and prevents any deterioration.

So far, four machining centres have been installed at the Toulouse facilities, the other two are currently in production and will soon be delivered and installed at the Airbus plant.

Other aerospace manufacturing solutions by MCM featured at the show include an FMS for the production of turbine disks for Safran Aircraft Engines and a wheel and hydraulic crown for an Airbus A320 braking system made from an aluminium alloy.

MCM (Machining Centres Manufacturing) – available in the UK from RK International Machine Tools – designs and manufactures horizontal machining centres, flexible manufacturing systems and customised solutions for multi-process integration. Established in 1978 in Piacenza, Italy, MCM is an international company that operates through three production sites in the Piacenza district and internationally through branches in France, Germany, the USA and China, as well as operating facilities in Spain, Russia, the UK, and Poland. To date MCM has manufactured around 2,500 production plants, installed in more than 30 countries, especially in aerospace, automotive, energy, general mechanics.

The MCM product range currently includes three lines of horizontal machining centres: Clock, Tank and Jet Five; integrated automation systems, including machine tools of different types and technologies and supervision software.

Its IT division, MCE, developer of the jFMX suite, has been developing software for production supervision since 1986.

The company can be found in Hall 1, Stand G300 at the Paris International Airshow.
